Inscription. Born and raised in Bay City, MI, made pro debut at 18, leading Appalachian League with 13 HR’s in 93 games at Kingsport, along with 17 Doubles, 10 Triples, 20 SB and 73 RBI. Lead GA-FL loop in ‘47 with 25 HR’s and 103 RBI, while hitting.334 in 1947.

Continued progress in ‘48 leading Southeastern League with 24 HR’s along with 115 RBI and .321 mark, after 1 ½ years at Des Moines started 6 year stint at Portsmouth in 1950. 30 HR’s and 116 RBI led ‘51 Piedmont and ‘52 brought Triple Crown with 28, 104 and .334 average. After 3rd straight HR Crown (30) and 113 RBI in ‘53, limited by injuries to 19 HR, 76 RBI in ‘54.

Named manager of Portsmouth Cubs for ‘55, led club to play-offs with league leading 41 homers and 113 RBI, while hitting .325.

With demise of Piedmont League, had greatest season at Shreveport in 1956, leading Texas League with phenomenal 62 homers, 143 RBI and 115 Runs scored.

Considered one of all-time great minor league sluggers with 8 home run titles and 5 RBI Crowns in 15 year career.

The shrine is located at Harbor Park, which is home to the Norfolk Tides, a AAA minor league baseball team affiliated with the Baltimore Orioles. The Norfolk Tides annually induct new members into the shrine.
