Welland Canal Olympic Torch Relay - Monday December 21, 2009
On December 21st 2009, the Olympic Torch passed through Welland making its way to Vancouver, BC to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. The planning task force that brought the concept of the event to be a reality wanted to achieve the following goals:
1. To create a sense of community via the Torch Relay Event by helping to bring the residents of the city together to celebrate this historic event.
2. To expose youth and familes to the Olympic movement and the history of the games as well as the Torch Relay.
3. To emphasize and showcase the multicultural diversity of Welland.
4. To create excitement around the 2010 Olympic Games in Canada.
5. To stage a safe and family friendly event in our community.

Le 21 décembre 2009, la flamme olympique a passé par Welland en route pour les Jeux olympiques d'hiver de 2010 à Vancouver, en Colombie britannique. Le comité organisateur qui a réalisé ce project s'était fixé les buts suivants:
1. Créer un sentiment de communauté par le biais de la manifestation du relais de la flamme en réunissant les citoyens pour célébrer cet événement historique.
2. Donner à la jeunesse et aux familles l'occasion de connaître le mouvement olympique ainsi que l'histoire des jeux et du relais de la flamme.
3. Mettre en valeur la diversité multiculturelle de Welland.
4. Soulever l'enthousiasme pour les Jeux olympiques de 2010 au Canada.
5. Organiser dans notre communauté un événement sécuritaire et approprié aux familles.
