1. John A. (Buddy) Hassett Marker

Inscription. Playing only 2nd professional season, led 1934 Norfolk Tars to Piedmont League flag. Hit .360 stole 56 bases, a league mark that stood 20 years.

With Brooklyn in 1936, set present Major League rookie record with only 17 strikeouts in 156 games. Also had 197 hits same season. Only 4 men in 100-year National League have exceeded 200 as a rookie.

Compiled .292 lifetime average as Dodger, Brave and Yankee first baseman. Hit .333 in 1942 Yankee-Cardinal World Series, before entering military service.

Returned to manage Tars in 1947.

Tidewater Baseball Shrine recognizes players and executives who have significantly contributed to the game of baseball in the Tidewater area of Virginia. The shrine is located at Harbor Park, which is home to the Norfolk Tides, a AAA minor league baseball team affiliated with the Baltimore Orioles. The Norfolk Tides annually induct new members into the shrine.
