Had 6-1 mark in only season at Villanova University, then sign to bonus contract by Harry Postove for Chicago White Sox.
Chicago limited by then-current rules to retain either Howard or Denny McLain, chose his 7-3, 2.34 ERA over McLains 4-7, 3.56, both at Clinton (Midwest) in 1962.
Ten wins and 2.93 at Eugene (1963) earned September promotion and 2-1 record in rookie trail with Sox.
League best 2.20 ERA and 15-8 slate at Indianapolis in 1964 made him Chicago starter through 1967.
Best season (1966) gave up only 110 hits in 149 innings and was 9-5 with 2.30 ERA.
Traded to Baltimore in 1968 for All Star shortstop Luis Aparico and wound up career with Washington Senators.
Recognized by scouts as one of the finest pitching talents ever developed in Tidewater.
