1. Anthony (Tony) Lazzeri Marker

Inscription. San Francisco native started pro career at 17 with Salt Lake City (P.C.L.). Gained experience at Peoria (‘23) and Lincoln (‘24). At Salt Lake in 1925 set records that will stand forever. Scored 202 Runs, had 222 RBI, with 60 HR’s and .355 Average.

Bought by Yankees (1926), played every game, hit .275 with 114 RBI, 14 Triples and 18 HR’s , sparking N.Y. to 1st of 3 straight World Series. Hit over .300 5 times, had over 100 RBI 7 times in 12 years with Yanks, hitting behind Lou Gehrig for the juggernaut that won 5 World Series.

Played with Cubs (‘38), Giants and Dodgers (‘39), before becoming player-manager at Toronto (I.L) in 1940. S.F. (P.C.L.) in 1941 and Portsmouth in 1942. His Piedmont League team lost the pennant by .0002 on final day of season to Heine Manush’s Greensboro Club.

Elected to Cooperstown (1991), was first player in Major League history with two grand slams in a game, to hit 5 HR’s in 2 games, 6 in 3 games and is still co-holder of those records. Holds A.L. marks with 11 RBI in a game and 7 HR’s in 4 games.

Consider one of the great offensive second basemen, had .292 career mark, with 178 HR’s, 1191 RBI, 115 Triples and 148 Stolen Bases in 14 seasons.

Baseball Shrine recognizes players and executives who have significantly contributed to the game of baseball in the Tidewater area of Virginia. The shrine is located at Harbor Park, which is home to the Norfolk Tides, a AAA minor league baseball team affiliated with the Baltimore Orioles. The Norfolk Tides annually induct new members into the shrine.
