After 2 years in the service , sparked 1953 Norfolk Tars to pennant and playoff titles, and led Piedmont League in hitting (.333), RBI (133), Doubles (33), and Hits (180), while hitting 21 HRs for Mickey Owens champions.
Draft by Pittsburgh after that phenomenal season, started 13-year major league career that led him from Pirates and Cincinnati in 1957, and back to Pittsburgh for 4 more seasons in 1963.
Solid left hand hitter compiled a .277 lifetime mark, double figures in HRs 6 times, and one World Series with Cincinnati in 1961.
Although always considered a complete player, he achieved greatest acclaim as one of the games top all-time pinch hitters. Was 2nd in appearances and hits at time of his 1991 induction. Still holds National League record with 18 pinch hit home runs, second only to Cliff Johnsons 20 in Major League history.
Partners for 25 years with the great Dick Groat in Champion Lakes Golf Club near Pittsburgh, and retired to Lawrenceville, Georgia.

The shrine is located at Harbor Park, which is home to the Norfolk Tides, a AAA minor league baseball team affiliated with the Baltimore Orioles.
