Inscription. Rifle arm, timely hitting and handling of pitchers made Navy veteran mainstay catcher of Cubs and Pittsburgh from 1940-1956.

35-year Tidewater resident coached with Washington, Minnesota and N.Y. Mets. In first 9 years managing had 4 pennants, 8 first division finishes and named All Star manager 5 times.

Led Tides to 1969 I.L. Pennant and named Minor League Manager of the Year by Sporting News.

Outstanding teacher, has started countless players on road to major league stardom.
