1. Dobbie House 1875 - Marker

Inscription. It is tempting to think that Scottish immigrant Archibald Dobbie had a vision of the great things he would achieve in Thorold when he settled here shortly after marrying Christianna Zavitz in 1853. Within two decades, he had established the highly successful Thorold Foundry and had expanded his business interests to upstate New York.

The Italianate style of the stately two-storey brick house he had built in 1875, with its distinctive windows, ornate chimneys and deeply-eaved hipped roof, was meant to underline the family's wealth and social standing. Today, it is a landmark that bears witness to the legacy of another of Thorold's many self-made men.
