1. Lancaster Castle Marker
Inscription. Lancaster Castle's origins date back almost 1,000 years. This Grade I Listed building is built on the site of three successive Roman forts and is owned by the British Monarch as part of the Duchy of Lancaster.

Until recently, the Castle was a working category C prison. Decommissioned in 2011, today the Castle is a historic heritage site described by English Heritage as "not only the North-West's most important historic and archaeological monument, but also one of International importance".
