All-time baseball and basketball star at Maury High declined numerous college scholarships in favor of Boston Red Sox contract.
After 2 years in Army Air Force began pro career in 1947 at Lynn, Mass., later attended V.P.I. and graduated from U. of Miami during off-season.
Quickly progressed to Bostons top club at Louisville in 1950 and with same club in 1951 hit .321, named to American Association All-Star Team and Look Magazine All-National Association Team.
Stymied in Major bid after brief stay by line up of 8 .300 hitters. Optioned to San Diego and then sold to Cardinals and finished career as International League star at Rochester in 1953-54.
Renowned as one of the top defensive shortstops in all baseball, led virtually every league in least strikeouts. Great crowd favorite was honored with presentation of new cars by fans in both Scranton and Rochester.
