Inscription. Following the Norman Conquest, Richard Fitzgilbert was granted lands in Kent. To guard a crossing of the River Medway he built a wooden castle. The castle passed to the de Clare family but when they rebelled against King William II he burnt it down. In 1259 the castle was rebuilt in stone by Richard de Clare, Earl of Hertford. It was used during the Civil War in 1600 and in the late 18th century the mansion was added to the site.

The local council purchased the site in 1898. The Mansion is now home to the former Council chamber of the Tonbridge Urban Council, the Tourist Information Centre, council offices and the grounds are a public park.
