1. Tonbridge Castle Marker
Inscription. This is the last of our seven viewpoints. The first castle at Tonbridge was a timber structure. The site was chosen for its views of the town and fort its close proximity to the river. The de Clare family owned Tonbridge Castle for over three hundred years. They were one of the great Norman noble families that had come across to England with William the Conqueror.

The Castle was in its heyday in about 1270. By this time the timber had been replaced with stone and the great Gatehouse had been built. The Gatehouse was the heart of a complete circuit of walls and moat that surrounded the Castle. A drawbridge over the moat could be raised to isolate the Castle and defend it from intruders.

Erected by Tonbridge and Mailing Borough Council. (Marker Number 7.)
