1. Charles K. (Chuck) Stobbs Marker

Inscription. Born in Wheeling, WV, became one of Tidewater’s greatest all-around athletes as QB on 3 undefeated Granby teams, 20 point ball-handling basketball guard and outstanding hitter as well as pitcher.

Chose 1947 bonus contract with Red Sox over scores of football scholarships and reached majors shortly after 18th birthday by going 9-2 with 1.72 ERA at Lynn, Mass. in only minor league appearance of his career.

After compiling 3 straight winning seasons with Boston (1949-51), spent one year with White Sox before trade to Washington in 1953.

Won over 10 games four times with Senator teams that never finished in 1st Division. His 64 wins are tied for 2nd among all post-1920 Washington Southpaws, and he ranks in top 20 all-time fielding pitchers.

After 15 Major League seasons, he broadcast in Washington area, coached at George Washington U., and worked as coach and instructor for K.C. Royals and Cleveland.

Credits much of his success to his American Legion coach, the great Paul Decker, who also signed him for the Red Sox.
