Inscription. Born in Kennersville, NC, began career as pitcher and outfielder in semi-pro ranks around Winston-Salem at age 17.

After phenomenal 1923 debut as an outfielder at Raleigh with .418 Average, 28 Doubles, 25 Triples, 24 HR’s and 137 RBI’s in 112 games, was sold to Washington and doubled in 1st Major League at bat.

Opened 1924 with Senators and after .323 season with Chattanooga and Memphis was traded even-up for Stan Kovelskie who led Washington to the 1925 flag with 20-5 mark and league-leading 2.84 ERA.

Became a minor league hitting legend with lifetime.321 Average in nearly 2000 games spanning 20 years. Never struck out over 30 times in a season and though never given another Major League opportunity, was great favorite in several leagues throughout East and Southeast.

Played in Norfolk 4 different times with 1931 his best year here, hitting .342 with 39 Doubles and 101 RBI’s.

Retired after 1935 season, but returned to Tars at urging of H.P. Dawson for 1943 and 1944 seasons. Made permanent home in Tidewater after World War II.
