1. Edward Mayo Smith Marker

Inscription. Born in New London, Missouri, moved to Lake Worth, Florida where he lived the rest of his life.

Left hand hitting outfielder began 18 year career playing with Toronto (I.L.) at age 18. Perennial star in I.L. Hit .340 at Buffalo in 1944 and spent next season with Philadelphia A’s.

After 3 seasons at Portland (P.C.L.) and 2 years Player-Manager at Amsterdam, N.Y. (1949-50), came to Norfolk and was Manager of the Year as he led Tars to consecutive Piedmont League Pennants in 1951-52.

Quickly rose to helm of the Phillies (1955-58), and Cincinnati (1959). After 7 years as Superscout with Yankees (1960-66), achieved greatest success as Manager at Detroit (1967-70).

Named Manager of the Year for thrilling 1968 World Championship victory over Cardinals capping 103-59 regular season. Retired after 1970 season with 662-611 Major League record.
