Inscription.
By the late 1800's the town fathers had been meeting on the second flor of the fire hall next to the county buildings on Cross St. Several times the building was impacted by fires that had started in a nearby hotel. Council meetings were held during the intervals in the county buildings. After flirting with the idea of building a town hall, money was finally set aside and a Toronto architect was hired. Construction began on the corner of Division and South Main (King St.) with the date of completion to be the end of 1900.

The opening was delayed, due to the addition of final details, until the following March. The completed three story structure had a bell tower 76 feet high. It housed the council chambers on the top floor, a library and municipal offices. Later, the local police were housed on the bottom floor. It was demolished in 1959.
