Inscription.
The Welland Iron Works, owned by Beatty & Sons, started business around 1860. It would be found on the north side of the Niagara St. Bridge in the small park and neighbouring land on the east side of the street. His business soon grew into one of the leading industries in Welland. Sixty to one hundred skilled mechanics were employed to build products for use everywhere in Canada. The firm manufactured many things, including steam dredges, derricks, shovels, hoisting machines, submarines, drilling equipment, suspension cables and centrifugal pumps for water sand and gold mining. As the business continued to grow, their location did not lend itself to expansion so Beatty moved his business to the corner of Lincoln St. (Water St.) and King St. (South Main St.). The foundry continued to occupy the old site with new owners under the name of Welland Iron and Brass. The foundry closed and was demolished in the 1990's.
