Inscription. Clyde “Ducky” Davis was active in baseball as both an umpire and scout for over 40 years in Hampton Roads area. Davis umpired eight high school State Championships, five thoroughbred World Series games, six Regional Tournaments, and three National Tournaments and has served as the Deputy Umpire-in-Chief for 14 years with the ASA. He umpired in eight Collegiate Conferences which included the Dixie, ODAC, CAA, Metro, CIAA, MEAC, Sun Belt and ECAA Baseball Conferences. Through the years, Davis has umpired in four NCAA Division III Regional Tournaments, two Sun Belt Tournaments, along with the CIAA, Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournaments. Internationally, Davis umpired such contests as USA against South Korea, Chinese Taipei and Cuba . His impressive baseball and softball umpiring resume also includes stints as an alternate in both the Carolina and International Leagues.

His influence helped establish an association for local umpires, and used that organization to instill the officials not just with rules training, but with a deeper sense of preparation and professionalism. Davis would arrange for prominent Major League Umpires to come to Virginia and give clinics to local umps, raising the level of officiating at every level and in the process raising the caliber and the profile of baseball in the Hampton Roads region.

Decades after he started this organization, subsequent generations of umpires in the region continue to benefit from his vision and dedication at every level from Little League to Major League.

Ducky Davis was elected to the Tidewater Virginia ASA Hall of Fame as an umpire in 1990, the National Indicator Fraternity in 1991, was elected as Lifetime Member of ASA of America in 2000, and earned the Bud Metheny Award in 2013. He also served as President for five years of the Eastern Virginia Officials Association, was a lifetime member of the Eastern Virginia Officials Association and was elected to th Eastern Virginia Officials Association Hall of Fame in 2002. Davis was also elected into Hall of Fames which also include Oscar Smith High School (Class of 1958), and the Tidewater Virginia ASA Hall of Fame as an umpire in 1990.

Davis served as an Associate Scout for the Florida Marlins for 10 years, and as an Associate Scout for the Montreal Expos, New York Mets and the Baltimore Orioles. In 2004, Davis received the Middle Atlantic Major League Baseball Scouts Association Scout of the Year. Davis finished his career as an Associate Scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and was on the Board of Directors of the Middle Atlantic Major League Baseball Scouts Association as Treasurer.
