Gebouw De Haven staat op de plaats van drie oudere panden bij een zeepziederij. In 1856 liet de toenmalige directeur van de zeepfabriek, P.T. Viruly, dit grote woonhuis bouwen. In 1893 verkocht hij het en werd het een Joods bejaardentehuis. In de tuin staat nog het gerestaureerde Metaheerhuis waarin overledenen ritueel werden gewassen en in de kist gelegd.

Na deportatie van de meeste bewoners naar Sobibor in 1943 nam de Duitse bezetter het in gebruik. In 1953 werd het door de kerkvoogdij van de Hervormde Gemeente en in 1989 door een particuliere stichting aangekocht.

De eclectische stijl vertoont sterke overeenkomsten met het gebouw Arti Legi op de Markt.

(English translation:)
The De Haven building stands on the site of three older buildings belonging to a soap factory. In 1856, the then director of the soap factory, P.T. Viruly, commissioned the construction of this large house. In 1893, he sold it, and it became a Jewish retirement home. The restored Metaheerhuis, where the deceased were ritually washed and placed in their coffins, still stands in the garden.

most of the residents to Sobibor in 1943, the German occupiers took possession of it. In 1953, it was purchased by the church council of the Reformed Church and in 1989 by a private foundation.

The eclectic style bears strong resemblance to the Arti Legi building on the Markt.
