Inscription. Born in Farnham, Va., raised in Litwalton. Baseball and basketball standout at Lively High School.

Yankees’ H.P. Dawson signed for Oleander, N.Y. In 1952. Won 13 and led New York-Penn League with 226 strikeouts and moved up to Joplin.

1954 Norfolk Tars record of 9-6 with 144 K’s led him to Birmingham (13-8 with 186 strikeouts) and Richmond (14-11 and 161) successes before freak elbow fracture sidelined him in May 1958.

Was 6-1 with 2.88 ERA as 1959 Yankee rookie and named to 1960 All-Star Game with 13-3 mark. Appeared with N.Y. in 1960-61-62 World Series before trade to Washington.

Also with Cincinnati and California and was leading Pacific Coast League for several seasons before retiring in 1971 and devoting time, energy and talent to helping Youth League players.
