Joined Marines immediately after Pearl Harbor. Much decorated Gunnery Sergeant was wounded at Okinawa during 4th Pacific landing.
Resumed career (1946) in Class B, earned jump to Kansas City (AAA). Outstanding 1947 marks couldnt win berth with Champion Yankees, but 49 record of .305, 32 Doubles, 11 Triples, 23 HR and 100 RBI made him N.Y. Regular for next 11 years.
Key factors in skein of 5 straight pennants and 9 in 10 years, averaging 15 HR and over 60 RBI along with defensive prowess. Tied World Series record with 4 HR in 1958, and still holds all-time mark with hits in 17 straight games.
Traded to K.C. for Roger Maris in 61, named Manager in June. At Baltimore helm (1964-68). 1966 Manager of the Year after Series sweep of Dodgers.
Finished M.L. Career at Oakland (69), and came to Tides in 1971. Minor League Manager of the Year, winning 1972 Governors Cup and representing I.L. at Kodak Classic in Hawaii.
