1. Johnson Farm Apple House Marker

Inscription. The Johnson Farm Apple House was a two-level structure. The upper level served as a storage/drying area for food and the lower level served as the farm's root cellar. Canned goods, as well as apples and potatoes, were stored in bins on the earthen floor underneath dry leaves and old quilts for protection from the cold.

The Apple House was constructed by digging a five-foot deep pit in the ground and building a log enclosure in the hole measuring twelve feet by fifteen feet.
