Lakeside Daisy. . The Lakeside daisy (Tetraneuris herbacea) is a beautiful, spring-blooming plant found only in a few Midwestern states and Ontario, Canada. It is a Federal threatened and state endangered species due to its rarity. The heart of its US. range is here on the Marblehead Peninsula, Ohio. It was named by the botanist, Clarence M. Weed, in 1890 when he discovered it growing near Lakeside. Thousands of Lakeside daisies occur in the active Lafarge Quarry in Marblehead, however the population is declining due to limestone mining operations. Lakeside daisy blooms with a spectacular display of bright yellow flowers in early May. Only the rosettes of leaves can be seen during the rest of the year Lakeside daisy thrives on barren limestone gravel and pavement known as alvar, and only survives' in this habitat with little competition.
