This pioneer Huerfano County family, whose political, business, and social contributions were a major factor in the growth and development of Walsenburg, were in continuous residence here from 1872 to 1980.
Erected 1991 by Levy family descendants.

1. Family honored with new memorial (The Pueblo Chieftain).
Excerpt: The memorial, placed by the remaining descendants, honors the Alexander Levy family, who came to Walsenburg when it was still known as Plaza de los Leones. Levy, a native of Austria, came to America when he was 13, first to the East Coast, then to Trinidad for several years. He landed in Plaza de los Leones in 1869.(Submitted on August 11, 2025, by Cosmos Mariner of Cape Canaveral, Florida.)In 1872, he formed a partnership in a mercantile with Fred Walsen, for whom the city was later named. Levy and Walsen later became brothers-in-law, marrying Sporleder sisters. Levy married Lillie Louise and Walsen married Amelia.
Levy was an important part of the city's history. He was responsible for bringing electricity to Walsenburg and served as county treasurer for Huerfano County (which included Pueblo at the time). Levy served six terms on the school board and was very active in the Masonic Lodge throughout Southern Colorado.
