Educated in Indiana's public schools, Sutton was a prominent merchant and public official, as well as a patron of the railroad and Indiana Normal School. In 1853, Sutton and his partners built a downtown store called Sutton, Marshall & Stewart. It later bec[a]me known as Stewart Hardware (or the "Big Warehouse"), owned by the father of movie star Jimmy Stewart.
Sutton served on the Indiana Borough Council and was elected Associate Judge in 1861. During the Civil War, he served on the executive committee of the Indiana County Soldiers' Relief Association. In 1866, he was elected president of the Indiana Freedmen's Aid Society, which provided relief and education for ex-slaves.
