The black granite of the base is a reminder of the black days of hardship that war forced us to endure and is a special remembrance of those who lost their lives., The formation of B-17s honors the 95th Bomb Group for 321 combat missions and as the leader of the first American bombers to complete a daylight raid on the Nazi capital of Berlin., Activated 15 June 1942 Barksdale, La. We dedicate this memorial to all members of the 95th Bomb Group (H) and attached units who dedicated themselves to an untiring and unselfish commitment to victory., Their combined efforts resulted in official recognition as the only group in the 8th Air Force to receive three Presidential Distinguished Unit Citations., Regensburg 17 August 1943 Munster 10 October 1943 Berlin 4 March 1944, We pay special tribute to friends and crew members who gave their lives fighting to assure the security of America's freedom. We have encased within the memorial a Purple Heart Medal and a scroll containing the names of each of the 611 men who were killed and 5 men presumed killed in action., Pray for all the brave souls who gave America this gift of freedom.
