Pueblo Trading Post
(Fort Pueblo, El Pueblo)
| | The Pueblo Heritage Walk | |
The Pueblo Trading Post (Fort Pueblo, El Pueblo), located on the American side of the Mexico border, was established in 1842 by French and American traders who worked out of Bents Fort, located seventy miles east on the Arkansas River. it allowed them access to the Ute tribes and to be closer to the village of Taos, Mexico (New Mexico), a supplier of trade goods and Mexican masons for laying adobe bricks. The post was a busy place where trappers, traders, and Native Americans would meet, negotiate, and do business with their buffalo hides, beaver pelts, crops, liquor, guns, tools, and trinkets. There was a constant turnover of inhabitants at the post with mixed and various relationships among the men, women, and children during the post's existence. The initial founders were of a transient nature and did not stay long. The three most enduring personalities of the revolving occupants were all Mexican citizens and came north to take advantage of the new post: Marcelino Baca, a trapper, Charles Autobees, a trader, and Teresita Sandoval, the companion of a rancher. Many others also came from Mexico to build and run the post. The aforementioned three were living near and trading at the post in 1854, but not present at the site, when it was left abandoned after a Ute tribe attacked and eliminated all the inhabitants.
