Inscription.

in the first half of the 14th century from the architects Andrea Pisano, Francesco Talenti, Neri di Fioravante and Benci di Cione, the open loggia was used for the sale of the grain. The building has two upper storeys that it was used as a granary. Due to the growth of devotion for an image of the Madonna, the loggia was closed in, involving elegant mullioned windows in late gothic style and stained glass. The tabernacles around the outside were assigned to the Florentine Guilds, center of the economic activity of Florence and integral part of its democratic governament in the 14th and 15th centuries. These institutions commissioned sculptures of their patron saints for the tabernacles. Orsanmichele became then the most beautiful collections of sculptures by the greatest artist of late Gothic and Renaissance. The original sculptures are housed in the Museum, in the upper floor. Inside the church, Andrea Orcagna built a monumental marble altar for the Madonna delle Grazie.
