"I am truly sensible of the high Honour done me in this Appointment… I do not think myself equal to the Command I am honored with." — George Washington, Address to the Continental Congress, June 16, 1775

On June 15, 1775, the Second Continental Congress appointed George Washington commander in chief of the Continental Army. For the next eight years, Washington led the American forces as they fought for independence from Great Britain. These forces spent far less time on the battlefield than in encampments. The largest Revolutionary War encampment was at Valley Forge over the winter of 1777-1778, where 12,000 American soldiers and 400 women and children lived from December to June.

The Patriots Path Encampment highlights the day-to-day experience of one company of soldiers and civilians - about 65 people total - and commemorates the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution and George Washington's role as commander in chief of the Continental Army.

The Patriots Path is made possible by Americana Corner, an organization dedicated to educating Americans about the nation's founding principles and history.

Erected by George Washington’s Mount Vernon and Americana Corner.
