1. Fish Wheel Marker

Inscription. The fish wheel is the major means of fishing the interior rivers, used by both the whites and the natives for commercial and subsistence purposes. It was developed in northern Europe, brought to New England, and then to the west coast, where fish wheels sometimes reached the size of ferris wheels on the Columbia River, Goldminers introduced the fish wheel to the north. Three species of salmon spawn in the interior rivers from June till October, traveling over 1,000 miles from the Bering Sea to the upper Tanana Valley. The river current turns the wheel, salmon slide from the baskets into a box.
