Inscription.
Union at the End of the Tunnel is near the site of a significant event in California history: the 'wedding of the rails,' which took place on September 5, 1876. Previously accessible by ship and wagon, Los Angeles was an isolated outpost until the Southern Pacific and Central Pacific Railroad tracks were joined together with a golden spike east of the Vista Canyon Multi-Modal Center. This civic art piece is inspired by these significant historical events, notably the considerable contribution of the Chinese labors recruited to work on the 7000 foot tunnel through the San Gabriel mountains to connect the railways between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
