Chiesa di San Francesco
⎯⎯⎯
Church of Saint Francis
The church was originally dedicated to St. John and belonged to the order of the Knights of Jerusalem. It dates back to the beginning of the thirteenth century, but the only part of the primitive building still standing today is the lower section of the facade which is marked by five bowed arches set on semi-columns. The capitals are sculpted with human faces and foliage, while on the sides they are clawed. The portal opens out from the central arch, and set inside its archivolt a moulded lunette stands out, bearing the sculpted cross of the Knights of Jerusalem. The various decorative patterns of the facade are evidence of the influence of Pisa and Lucca, even though re-elaborated and re-interpreted by local workers.
