1. Canadian Pacific Railroad Roundhouse Marker

Canadian Pacific Railroad Roundhouse. . On this site, west of the original location of the station, was the roundhouse for the engines of the Canadian Pacific Railroad. It was constructed in time for the opening of this railway in 1907 along with a turntable positioned directly in front (approximately the present location of the former station). Since this was the western terminus of the line, it was necessary to turn the locomotives to the 'heading out' direction after their arrival and before storage in the shed. Out of the weather storage was available for up to six engines, overnight or on weekends., This rail line was originally built as the Guelph-Goderich Railway but was leased by the CPR before the line was officially opened. The nearby CPR bridge, crossing the Maitland River, was constructed beginning in 1906. By the 1940s, as many as three freight trains a day would leave Goderich for the east with primarily loads of western grain from the Goderich Elevators., After the steam era closed even the diesel engines were stored inside the roundhouse, particularly the yard engine. In the mid-1960s, this unique building was demolished and a single engine shed was built for the yard engine just east of the station's former location.
