Inscription. Originally constructed circa 1881 by Nathaniel Byington, this building at 317 Maple was first known as the Byington Boarding House. There were 27 rooms in the building. It gained the most notoriety, however, as Richards House, so named by its early owners, the Reverend and Mrs. Jesse and Ella Richards. Over the years a number of other buildings were added to the "complex" known as Richards House. In 1882, the house behind the hotel at 316 Walnut (currently Tree-House Cottage) was used as employees' quarters.

Remodeling the hotel and adding an annex immediately to the north at 315 Maple around 1898 increased the number of rooms to 70. In 1932, "Woodlawn" at 310 Walnut (currently Evening Song Cottage) added 20 rooms. The house at 319 Maple was connected to the hotel and featured rooms upstairs with additional dining downstairs. At its prime, the Richards House had 90 units and a cafeteria with a capacity for 200 guests. At various times the building was also known as Hotel Richards and Poor Richards Inn.

In 1992, the hotel was converted to apartments and later sold as condominiums Today, its fourteen units are privately
