Regarding Leopold II. Leopold II served as the last ruling Grand Duke of Tuscany from 1824 until 1859. It could not be immediately determined what the link is between Leopold II, San Gimignano or the building where this plaque is located, and the date at the beginning of the inscription, April 8, 1835.

Originally known for allowing reforms in his realm, Leopold became increasingly unpopular during the final years of his reign as he tried to tamp down those changes, and as the Austrians occupied the region in the early 1850s. Leopold abdicated the throne in 1859 with a plan to be succeeded by his son, Ferdinand IV, but was never able to take the throne. In 1860, Tuscany became part of what would soon be called the Kingdom of Italy.

in 1855, Leopold’s prestige remained low. He refused the popular demand to join the French and Sardinians in their war against Austria in 1859, and, in the face of mounting opposition, he quietly left Tuscany (April 27) to abdicate in favour of his son Ferdinand IV (July), who never reigned."
