1. 357th Fighter Group Marker
Inscription. The 357th Fighter Group activated on 1 December 1942 at Hamilton Field, California. Arrived in England on 30 November 1943 and was assigned to the Eighth Air Force; the first P-51 Group of the Eighth. First Combat Mission flown on 11 February 1944. During 14 months of combat it's primary mission was Bomber Escort. 313 missions were flown. 596 enemy aircraft were confirmed destroyed in air and 107 on the ground. 46 Pilots became Aces with 5 or more air victories each. The Distinguished Unit Citation was twice awarded and the French Croix De Guerre. The Group's greatest victory came on 14 January 1945 when 56 enemy aircraft were destroyed establishing an air combat record. This memorial is dedicated to the memory of the 82 men of the 357th Fighter Group who lost their lives in the Fight for Freedom and to all those who served in the 357th Group and it's supporting Units during World War II.
