1. Kitchen Marker
This kitchen was built soon after the Roberts family arrived in Immokalee in 1914 and is the oldest building on the homestead. It was originally placed on an east-west axis and was connected to the Roberts' log pen home by an open-sided breezeway or dogtrot.
Early pioneers placed their kitchens at the rear of the home to isolate heat and cooking smells, and to guard against the threat of fire. The open dogtrot provided convenient access to the kitchen without having to go through the house.
This small building served as both kitchen and dining room for the eleven members of the Roberts family. In later years, the kitchen was turned to face north, wings were added to the sides, and the building was converted to storage.
