1. Log Pen Marker
Many of Immokalee's early white settlers built their first homes from pine or cypress logs that were notched at the ends and stacked to form the walls of a single-room cabin or pen. These logs are all that remain of the original single pen home that once stood on this site. It was built around 1871 by cattleman Charles W. Hendry and was the Roberts family's first home in Immokalee. The homestead's oldest buildings are all located here.
Robert Roberts and his brother enlarged the cabin before bringing his family here in 1914, adding a second room by filling in one side of the front porch. Two smaller bedrooms were also added behind the two pens. The main house was connected to a newly-built kitchen by a breezeway or dogtrot. The home was large enough to accommodate Roberts, his wife, and their seven children. Two more children, Grace Mildred and Robert Allen, were born in this log house. Roberts also served as Immokalee's postmaster from 1919 until 1923, providing mail service from the front room.
The Roberts family lived in this log pen until 1926, when their new house was completed.
