1. Horse Ramp Marker
Horse Ramp
Trucking the cowmen and their horses out to the cattle herd saved time and spared the riders many long hours of travel in the saddle. This loading chute or horse ramp was built in the late 1940s and was used to walk horses onto the truck.
Unlike Western cowboys, Florida cowmen used long, braided leather whips to work their herds and relied on fast "catch dogs" to chase down strays. Heat, sudden thunderstorms and swarms of mosquitoes added to the hardship of spending a long day riding herd in the saddle.
