Chicken Coop
Keeping chickens for the family's use was, and still is, a common practice on American farms and ranches. An excellent food source, chickens also helped keep insects under control and provided fertilizer for the family garden.
Women and children were usually responsible for feeding the chickens and gathering eggs, as well as slaughtering and preparing the birds for cooking. Housing the chickens in a small coop from dusk to dawn helped keep them safe from foxes, raccoons and other predators.
Clipping the tips of the feathers on one wing also kept the chickens in the yard and prevented them from escaping over the fence.
