1. Smokehouse Marker
Smokehouse
In the days before electricity and refrigeration, meat was cured with salt and smoked over a fire to keep it from spoiling. The women of the Roberts household were responsible for salting the meat, hanging it to dry, building a fire of oak or cypress on the floor of the smokehouse, and making sure that the building did not burn down while the meat was slowly smoked for several days. Cured meat was stored in the smokehouse, wrapped in flour sacks or burlap bags.
This smokehouse was built soon after the Roberts family moved into the main house in 1926. The openings were screened to keep out flies. A concrete floor was added years later, when the building was converted to storage.
Ahumadero
