This Italianate-style home was built in 1873 for Hiram Griggs (1836 1909), a lawyer who opened his practice in Knowersville on September 30, 1862. For 47 years, Mr. Griggs provided legal counsel and leadership to his village, town, county, and state. From 1867 to 1877, he was the Supervisor of the Town of Guilderland. He served three terms in the State Legislature. He was a leader in the movement to incorporate this village and on October 18, 1890, by a vote of 102 to 3, the village of Altamont was established. In November of 1890, he was elected the first President of the new village. He served a total of seven one-year terms lasting until 1898. In 1892, he chaired the first meeting to establish the Altamont Fair. He remained active in village affairs until his death in June 1909. (Marker Number 6.)
