Brindley Bridge. Hugh Payne Brindley, Sr.. A true leader among men, Brindley was a multifaceted businessman and visionary civic leader. As a member of the Flying 50 and Chamber of Commerce, he served as a board member and President, which led him to be involved with the construction of the Lewis Smith Dam; establishing the county airport, the Marshall Durbin Project; and being instrumental in obtaining funding for paving Eva Road. He served as President of the Kiwanis Club that started the Christmas Basket Project, was a member of the Masonic Order, and served on the board of Piggly Wiggly Distributing Company. Though not able to attend college himself, he served as Trustee of Samford University for fifteen years, as well as on the Development Board of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He is best remembered as a devoted family man, a church leader, a wonderful friend, a wise counselor, an untiring worker, and a generous community supporter who used his grocery business and tireless energy to promote the growth, economy, health and education of others.
