1. James Gillespie Birney Marker
Inscription. This site was briefly owned in 1829 by attorney and community leader, James G. Birney, who was elected Mayor of Huntsville on July fourteenth of that same year. He served as agent of The American Colonization Society in Alabama before moving to Kentucky. After achieving national fame as an outspoken abolitionist, he ran for President of The United States on the Liberty Party ticket in both 1840 and 1844.
