Northern Boundary of The Republic of Texas. . , April 21, 1836, General Sam Houston and the Texian Army defeated Mexican President, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. On May 14, 1836 the defeated Santa Anna signed the Treaty of Velasco, establishing The Republic of Texas, an independent nation. The new Republic claimed borders that encompassed an area that included all of present State of Texas as well as parts of Colorado, New Mexico, Kansas, Wyoming, and Oklahoma. Santa Anna removed his troops south of the Rio Grande River, setting the southern border to begin from the Continental Divide west then follow the course of the river southward to the Gulf of Mexico. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo 1848 ratified south and western boundaries between Mexico and Texas. The Western Boundary extended along the 107 meridian to the 42nd parallel, present day Wyoming. Texas became a State, February 19, 1846. The Compromise of 1850 gave Texas the present-day shape. Texas gave up claim to vast western territory in exchange for Federal Bonds. The New Western Territories were Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas and Oklahoma. The Territory of Wyoming existed from July 25, 1868 until July 10, 1890. The land south of the 42nd parallel, Carbon County is part of Wyoming Territory. Wyoming joined the United States July 10, 1890. The Eastern and Northern boundaries of The Republic of Texas were set by the 1819 Adams-Onis Treaty between Spain and the United States. According to the Treaty the borders extended from the mouth of the Sabine River, North to the 32nd parallel, then due North to the Red River, West to the 100 Meridian, then North to the Arkansas River, then West to the headwaters of the Arkansas River in present day Colorado. And finally, North along the 106 meridian to the 42nd parallel, present day Wyoming.
