St. Lucy/St. Bernadette Catholic Church
In 1887, Lucie Rochefort Cassidy (1830 – 1902), the owner of one of the summer mansions on the hill above Knowersville, purchased land on Grand Street from Abram A. Tygert. She then arranged for the construction of a Catholic chapel for the use of summer residents, their guests, and staff. All of this was done at her own expense. The chapel was dedicated in honor of St. Anthony of Padua on May 28, 1888. The chapel was renamed St. Lucy’s after the 1902 death of Mrs. Cassidy. Although the first chapel was primarily used only during the summer months and had few amenities and no heat, the congregation grew. On November 18, 1918, the chapel was incorporated into a parish. Major renovations including a heating system were done in 1922. In 1928, the exterior of the church was extensively modified.
