Altamont Reformed Church
The Altamont Reformed Church was constructed by contractor Hiram Schoonmaker on land donated by Melvin Beebe. Construction started in September 1887. The building was dedicated on October 3, 1888, as the “Second Reformed Church of the Helderberg.” The Altamont congregation remained connected with the older Helderberg Church in Osborne Corners until they separated in 1896 with 94 charter members forming the core of the new Altamont congregation. The Reverend Bergen Brokaw Staats (1880 – 1947) was pastor through the transition. In 1891, a church hall was built behind the church (it burned in 1911). The church’s parsonage was built in 1897. A fellowship hall and Sunday school classrooms were added in 1926. In 1960, it was extensively enlarged and remodeled.
