Altamont High School
The Altamont Union Free School was constructed in 1901 - 1902. It was designed by Altamont resident Wheeler D. Wright and built by James W. Packer, a contractor from Oneonta, NY. The building was the fourth school in the village. The construction was of brick with white marble trimmings. It had a capacity of 250 pupils and housed all the class levels. The building accepted its first students in September 1902. The first graduating class in 1905 had eleven students. The school offered free education to “pupils possessing the necessary credentials,” otherwise academic tuition was $3.50 a semester. Non-resident students often boarded with village families during the school week. The last graduating class was in 1954 with 10 students. The building was demolished in 1955.
