Luverne in Crenshaw County, Alabama — The American South (East South Central)
St. John Missionary Baptist Church
Crenshaw County
In 1887, St. John Baptist Church was established under a brush arbor in east Luverne. The congregation relocated to its present location when George Foreman, a white resident, donated property to the church in 1893. Years later, in 1937, a wood-framed church building was erected. Over its 135 years history, many pastors have served the church and its congregation, with the first presiding pastor being Rev. Jim Lawche. After the church building's construction was complete in 1937, the sanctuary was used for Baccalaureate services for the Crenshaw County Training School's graduating classes. The church was restored and renovated in 1965 and carefully preserved for decades. Since then, St. John Baptist Church has kept its traditions of serving the Luverne community and preaching the gospel.
