1. Pedro Menéndez de Avilés Mosaic Marker

Inscription. The theme of Pedro Menéndez, founder of St. Augustine, was the subject of the seventh annual San Agustín Ceramic Event, a collaboration of artists sponsored by the City of Avilés. Thirty-three artists from the Province of Asturias, including teachers and students from the Municipal Ceramic School of Aviles and the Ceramic School of Asturias, submitted individual tiles using diverse techniques and styles.

The City of Avilés shipped the tiles to St. Augustine, where skilled crews of the City of St. Augustine Public Works Department assembled a mosaic under the direction of Ramón Rodríguez, Director of the Municipal Ceramics School of Avilés.

The City of Avilés Spain presented the mosaic to the City of St. Augustine at an official ceremony on February 22, 2002. The mosaic is a symbol of the links binding St. Augustine, the oldest continuously settled European city in the United States, with Avilés, the home of Pedro Menéndez. The individual tiles of the mosaic illustrate Menéndez, his voyage and the founding of St. Augustine in 1565.
